Kenneth S. Sajwan May 10, 1949 – June 29, 2026
Kenneth S. Sajwan, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the age of 77. He was a beloved father, husband, friend; esteemed university professor and environmental scientist; and cherished member of the Savannah and CSRA (Coastal Savannah River Area) communities.
Kenneth (Kundan) was born in the village of Ghingari, India surrounded by the picturesque Himalayan mountains. Kenneth (Kundan) was the eldest son of the late Dhan S. and Parvati D. Sajwan. From these humble beginnings, Kenneth rose with determination and tenacity to become an internationally respected environmental scientist, mentor, and educator.
Kenneth received numerous local, national and international awards for teaching, research, and mentoring in environmental science. These distinguished awards included the White House US Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (2010); the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (2014); and the American Chemical Society Fellow (2017). Yet, it was undeniably his own children, as well as, the students he taught and mentored throughout his 34 years of service as Professor and Coordinator of the Environmental Science Program at Savannah State University that he was most proud of and considered this to be his greatest honor and “achievement” throughout his life.
Kenneth is survived by his devoted family including his children Maria E. and Joseph D., and his wife of 42 years Maria B. Sajwan. Ken (Kundan), likewise, leaves behind precious friends, relatives, and colleagues around the globe who dearly miss him as well.
Dr. Ken Sajwan's numerous contributions to academia and his community, his passion for environmental science teaching and research, his unwavering commitment to his students, along with his boundless energy, clever wit, generosity, and courageous spirit will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. “Doc's” extraordinary life and legacy serves as inspiration in overcoming against all odds and applying knowledge in service to our hurting world.
